Official release
An anonymous winner went to the Fas Mart at 110 S. Brookdale Street in Martinsville to get a drink and thought to himself, “Well, let me get a ticket.” So, he bought a Payday Tripler ticket from the Virginia Lottery. When he scratched the ticket in the store, he realized he had won the game’s top prize of $1,000,000.The winner chose to remain anonymous. Virginia law permits any winner of a Virginia Lottery prize to claim the prize anonymously, in which case the Lottery does not publicly disclose the winner’s identity.
“I scratched it, and I looked at it twice,” the winner told Lottery officials. “I went home and told my wife, ‘I think I won a million dollars!’ She said, ‘Get out of here!’”
This is the third and final top prize claimed in Payday Tripler (game #2390), which means the game is being closed. It is the Lottery’s policy to close scratcher games as soon as the final top prize is claimed. The chances of winning the top prize in this game were 1 in 408,000. The chances of winning any prize were 1 in 3.44.
The winner had the option of taking the full $1,000,000 prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $476,000 before taxes. He chose the cash option.
