Roanoke woman wins $100,000 in time for her birthday. She wins top prize in Double the Money scratcher.

An anonymous Roanoke woman enjoys playing Virginia Lottery online games. She won $100 and decided to take that money to the Food Lion at 2631 Peters Creek Road in Roanoke to buy some scratchers. She began scratching and was down to her last Double the Money ticket when she realized she had won the game’s top prize of $100,000. 

The winner chose to remain anonymous. Virginia law permits any winner of a Virginia Lottery prize to claim it anonymously, in which case the Lottery does not publicly disclose the winner’s identity. 

The win comes just in time for the Roanoke woman’s birthday. She plans to use the winnings to celebrate and to pay off her house.

Double the Money is one of dozens of scratcher games offered by the Virginia Lottery. It features prizes ranging from $10 up to that $100,000 top prize. This is the first top prize claimed in this game, which means two more remain unclaimed. The chances of winning the top prize are 1 in 897,600. The chances of winning any prize in this game are 1 in 4.91.

All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia. The winner lives in Roanoke City, which received more than $23.8 million in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year. In Fiscal Year 2026, the Lottery raised more than $914 million for K-12 education, making up approximately 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.
