How lottery taxes work in California

For Powerball, Mega Millions, and Lotto America, the advertised jackpot is a 30-payment graduated annuity (about +5% per year). The cash option is a separate published amount for that same drawing — not a fixed share of the headline. The IRS withholds 24% of proceeds (winnings minus wager) when those proceeds exceed $5,000 (Form W-2G instructions). Withholding is not the final tax. Modeled as California Lottery winnings (FTB-exempt). Selecting CA does not exempt other states’ lottery prizes for a California resident. We model a prize from the selected jurisdiction’s lottery — not “any prize won by a resident of that state.” Figures assume the prize is your only income after the standard deduction.

Cash vs annuity tips

  • Copy the published cash option for the same advertised jackpot; do not invent a percentage.
  • State withholding and final state liability are not always the same (for example Delaware does not withhold at the lottery).
  • Enter the ticket wager so the federal $5,000 proceeds test is applied correctly.
  • Sign the ticket and hire a tax professional before you claim. This calculator is an educational estimate, not a filing.

Frequently asked questions

Lottery prizes are ordinary income. Under IRS Instructions for Forms W-2G (Rev. January 2026), regular 24% gambling withholding applies when winnings minus the wager exceed $5,000; the payer withholds 24% of those proceeds (not merely the excess over $5,000). Installment payments of $5,000 or less are still subject to withholding if total proceeds from the wager exceed $5,000; the wager is subtracted at the first payment. Your final federal liability uses 2026 brackets (10%–37%). This page is not personalized tax advice.
