How lottery taxes work in Florida

U.S. lottery jackpots are advertised as 30-year annuities. If you take cash, the lottery pays a lump sum worth about 60% of that headline number. The IRS treats the cash (or each annuity check) as ordinary income: 24% is withheld on reportable gambling winnings of $5,000 or more, and the rest is settled on your return using the 2026 brackets up to 37%. Florida does not add a state income tax. For a mega jackpot, almost all of the tax drag is federal. These figures assume the prize is your only income after the standard deduction. Other income, itemized deductions, estate planning, and residency rules can change the result.

Florida does not tax lottery winnings (0%).

Lump sum vs annuity tips

  • Consider the lump sum if you want control of the money now, have high-interest debt, or a diversified investment plan — after you model federal (and Georgia) tax.
  • The annuity might be better if you want a 30-year paycheck, are worried about spending the cash too fast, or prefer spreading taxable income across years.
  • Withholding is not the final tax. On a $300 million cash option, 24% withheld is far less than the 37% top bracket. Budget for an additional federal payment.
  • Sign the ticket, keep it secure, and hire a tax professional before you claim. This calculator is an estimate for education, not a filing.
