“Granny, that’s not $10!” Grandmother and granddaughter claim $1,000,000 prize in 20X the Money.

An anonymous grandmother and her granddaughter went shopping at the Food Lion at 9030 Pocahontas Trail in Providence Forge. The grandmother decided to purchase a 20X the Money ticket and scratched it. She thought she had won $10 and was happy about it. Then, her granddaughter looked at the ticket. “Granny, that’s not $10!” she told her. The ticket was worth the game’s top prize of $1,000,000.

Both grandmother and granddaughter chose to remain anonymous. Virginia law permits any winner of a Virginia Lottery prize to claim it anonymously, in which case the Lottery does not publicly disclose the winner’s identity.  

The 20X the Money game (#2377) is one of dozens of scratcher games offered by the Virginia Lottery. It features prizes ranging from $10 up to that $1,000,000 top prize. This is the second top prize claimed in this game, which means three more remain unclaimed. The chances of winning the top prize are 1 in 1,664,640. The chances of winning any prize are 1 in 3.65.

The winners had the option of taking the full $1 million prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $476,000 before taxes. They split the cash option and each received $238,000 before taxes.

All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia. The winning ticket was bought in New Kent County, which received more than $1.6 million in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year. In Fiscal Year 2026, the Lottery raised more than $914 million for K-12 education, making up approximately 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.
